In this vlog entry, I share my impression of the new TV series, 'Jericho' and what I think of the deaf character featured on the show. I also share my opinion on the clichés and characteristic traits of the deaf character, Bonnie.

Much, much better! Your hands stayed inside the box. 'Lots more facial expressions, which gave you personality and helped the viewer understand and "feel" your story. But you didn't overdo it.

Nice job, you appeared natural and more relaxed the 2nd time around.

I agree about lip-reading. I do lip reading and I can only understand about 20 to 40% of the time. There are some words are look alike. I don't believe that are professional lip-reader. I'm not sure if you remember this. A investigator hires a professional or expert lip-reader to watch the tape and she tries to read the man's lips. I've tried to read it and most of them are not right. I haven't seen the show. I'm usually in bed by 9pm.
You did very well in your blog with CC.

    Thanks Ms. Jackson and Patty.

"Anonymous", if you wouldn't mind leaving your name or nickname next time you leave a comment, that would be great.

Thanks for letting me know which CSD she attended.

I thought the hearing woman didn't sign that good. I couldn't understand her! I didn't understand what she was trying to sign to Bonnie - all I saw was "run away" or "escape".

I, too, hope that the show won't get cancelled. I've been watching EVERY show thus far! I need to remember that it's on every Wednesday at 8 pm - I missed 1/2 hour this past Wednesday because I hadn't memorized the schedule yet!

I thought it was NOT in Colorado, but more East - like, one of the Dakotas?

  6. Banjo

The show takes in a town named "Jericho" which is in the state of Colorado. It's not far from where Denver is. In fact, it's the city that got nuked in the first episode.

The hearing woman, it was quite obvious to me that she didn't know how to sign. She signed quite a few signs that were pretty basic to start with.

I think there's a possibility that they will encourage the cast members to learn some signs over the next couple seasons if it doesn't get cancelled.

I haven't been able to watch TV that much this month due to a few personal reasons. But once again, great vlog, dude.

    Cheers.

    Banjo-

I have created an impromptu and admittedly superfical review of Jericho in an ASL vlog. You can view it at Google Video:

    Jericho Impromptu Review

I already have submitted a subtitle file, but the CC button hasn't shown up yet! :(

Too bad I'm not living in Riverside any more. It would have been nice to hook up and create a vlog movie/tv review or two, kinda like a Deaf Ebert/Siskel thing happening. :)

    Enjoy.

    Banjo-

As for your vlog, here's some unsolicited suggestions; Treat your vlog offerings as a 'public speaking' event. Maybe you want to do more of a relaxed style, and more power to you, I guess.

What I meant by 'public speaking' is that you prepare your comments, rehearse them through, and then turn on the camera. This is what I do with my vlog offerings.

Also, look up facts, etc. beforehand, instead of pausing on screen, squinting at some piece for names, spellings, etc. (BTW, it's Gerald Raney.)

Now, I've gotta investigate the Apple hardware/software approach in creating video content! Your opening credit sequence is vastly superior to what Windows MovieMaker offers. :(

Keep you your ASL vlogging efforts! I hope DeafBlogLand will have more and more of these vlogs from many other participants.

  10. Banjo

Todd, thanks for the suggestions. I appreciate them very much. Gerald McRaney, ah that's the one I was looking for. He has really aged over the years though, but with wisdom in his eyes.

Well, the truth... I wear eyeglasses. That's why I squinted when I was looking at how to spell the first name of the actress' as it's quite unique. Still, you're right. Next time, I'll make notes.

Apple's integrated iLife softwares are vastly superior to Microsoft Windows' free softwares, no doubt about that. There's a lot of benefits in using a Mac. In fact, the new Intel-based iMac and MacBook are equipped with a built-in iSight (webcam).

Anyway, thanks again. I'm always glad to hear from what people have to say.

P.S., thanks for mentioning me in your vlog. :-)

By the way, I live in Ontario, Canada.

Not Ontario, California. I was somewhere puzzled when you mentioned Riverside then I recalled that there was a city named Ontario in the state of California.

    Figures. LOL

  12. Todd

Thanks for the correction. Yes, there is a city named Ontario like 15 miles away from Riverside. Actually, it has an international airport that I used to fly in/out from.

BTW, the captions finally showed up. You can watch it again. Kinda interesting to see if the captions match up to what you 'interpreted' my signing in that vlog.

  13. Banjo

Just re-watched it. Matched pretty much all of what I interpreted except for the "Howie Mandall" bit. I know his name was mentioned, but didn't quite get the "fist" bit but now I get it now that it was captioned and I googled it up. Didn't realize that Howie had a famous gesture where he use his fist.

I should had known since Howie Mandel is a Canuck too as well. :-/

Not only to mention that some of our signs are somewhere different as we come from two different countries, even though we both use ASL but it varies by the region. Something like a dialect, you know.

Still, it's cool to see all sort of vlogs and I find it incredibly important that we don't practice reverse-discrimination by including captions for the hearing, after all... we're all advocating for captions, aren't we?

    :-)

Jericho sounds like something to get my teeth into as the days get shorter and colder. Wonder when it will come over to UK?
Good Vlog by the way, despite my not being fluent in ASL!
    Keep up the good work.

    Hey Banjo,
Been following you for quite some time now. I have been amazed by the articulate and well thought-out issues you post in your blogs. The vlogs are awesome and I appreciate your translation of ASL into subtitles. I, myself, am deaf, with an education not unlike yours. I went to a deaf institute during my younger formative years and as I moved into middle school, mainstreamed. Here is where my education differs, I tried to separate myself from the deaf culture since middle school. I am now educated to the Master's Graduate Level. Just recently I have picked up ASL again, and have at times utilized interpreters and yet find that I cannot string together nearly as much information from signing as I do from captions (real time or transcribed). So (here's where comments relevant to you come in) thank you for captioning and allowing me to expand my ASL knowledge beyond recognizing individual signs by placing them into the context of a signed converstation.

    Cheers,
    Echo

Thank you for the review of Jericho. Interesting you mentioned Firefly -- I did the exact thing! All the DVD, the movies, etc I want more! So since you like this show too, I'll try to find it (but have you noticed how often bittorrent tv shows have the captioning STRIPPED? grrr grrr grrr).

Your comments on the lipreading were hilarious! So true, so true. Every time I get cocky about my lipreading skills, all I have to do is take off my HA and try to do the same thing NO WAY. It helps clarify some things you miss hearing but yes I believe the 30%-40% is correct, the max for a skilled lipreader.

Anyway, keep it up. At this rate I might even learn some ASL.

I'll call myself Deaf Gadfly for now to distinguish myself among the other anonymous commenters. Born profoundly deaf, mainstreamed, wears HA, doesn't know ASL or any other deaf folk.

  17. Banjo

Gadfly, welcome to my blog. Sorry that I didn't catch your name the first time around in the other blog entry you made a comment on.

Anyway, I know a solution to that captioning issue that occur with video files downloaded via torrent clients. You can go to www.forom.com or http://www.podnapisi.net/ as they have subtitle files that you can download. Both require registration, but they don't spam as far I am concerned. I use them on a daily basis.

    Hope that was helpful.
