I looked up the distributor for the European edition.

I believe this was an independent production, so the distribution rights would have varied among the countries. Paramount hold the distribution rights to the movie in North America. Palisades Tartan released it in Europe.

Still, inexcusable.

Which Terry Pratchet movies are you referring to? I believe there were a few made in the last few years for TV. They aren't distributed by BBC here in North America from what I know. I think it's Rhi Entertainment who released them here.

For the Discworld collection, it's Paradox (Acorn Media) here. Probably not subtitled nor captioned. They were converted to region 1, and the subtitles were stripped. I was able to download an SRT file from a subtitle website but the timing is all mixed up due to the framerate differences in PAL vs NTSC. Since then I've discovered there are tools that will help you completely re-sync a subtitle file but I haven't had the time to really persue that. (it would take me hours of my time to enjoy a single movie, which I'd watch only once)

I may choose to explore this again, if I can find a way to auto-magically convert a PAL timed SRT file to play nice with the NTSC conversion we could re-distribute the SRT file for others who need subtitles. I was having a discussion via twitter with someone who claimed that he found that he often buys Region 1 DVDs because they are more often subtitled. The example he gave was blu-ray release of The Machinist - not subtitled on region 2, but is on region 1. So it can work the other way around. There doesn't seem to be much consistency between distributors?

I have the standard DVD release region 2 of The Illusionist which is subtitled (otherwise I never would've bought it) but I don't know about the blu-ray region 2.

And I agree with regards to Alliance. Terrible. I took advantage of a trip to Canada a few years ago by buying all seasons of a Canadian TV series on DVD over there because the Canadian DVD had English and French subtitles, the UK DVD release had none whatsoever - probably because it was released by a different distributor (Alliance was the original).

As for not subtitling the extras, I am gutted when I discover this on a DVD.

It would explain why everything on BBC discs are s...

It would explain why everything on BBC discs are subtitled/captioned.
